Grafting of Polybenzopyrrole and Polybenzothiophene onto Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes via in-Situ Polycondensation |

Graftings of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) in a mild polyphosphoric acid have been successfully conducted by using our empirically optimized conditions. However, the dispersibility of grafted MWNT’s into matrices such as solvents and polymers has been clearly enhanced, there still remains an issue needed to resolve. Functionalized MWNT’s scarify its conductivity due to the grafts such as organics or polymers encapsulate them. In this regard, the grafting of conductive polymers onto the surface of MWNT could somehow complement the conductivity loss of functionalized MWNT. On the basis of EA, TGA, and DSC results, polybenzopyrrole from pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid and polybenzothiophene from 2-thiophene carboxylic acid were successfully grafted onto MWNT’s as judged by carbon content, residual amount above 600 ℃, and glass transition temperature. The covalent attachment of the polymers to MWNT was further ascertained by SEM, TEM. |
