Activation of membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for unitized regenerative fuel cell (URFC) |

The activation process of MEA for URFC was studied in this work. The activation process of MEA was investigated with the polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. It was found that the cyclic voltammetry technique allowed a deeper activation of the MEA than the conventional galvanostatic activation process. The cyclic voltammetry technique significantly improved the catalytic activity due to removing impurities on the Pt catalyst during oxidation/reduction process. And it increased the proton conductivity owing to increasing water content in the membrane. Therefore, the cyclic voltammetry as an activation technique forced to reach faster saturation of unit cell performance. This is an important advantage in the start-up of polymer membrane-based fuel cell. |
