Significance of ferroelectric polarization in PVDF binder for high-rate Li-ion battery |

We investigated the effect of the crystalline phase of the PVDF binder in the electrodes. The ferroelectric PVDF binder is developed by an appropriate thermal annealing process that allows us to apply it to various active battery electrode materials. The active electrodes containing the ferroelectric PVDF binder exhibit greatly improved capacity performance at high current rates in both half- and full-cell architectures. This promising battery performance is systematically studied by in situ galvanostatic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (GS-EIS) and a galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) measurement. Furthermore, we demonstrate the ferroelectric contribution of PVDF binder in the battery system by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The resulting battery performance and DFT calculations support the finding that the polarization characteristics of binder material are a viable design strategy to enhance the battery performance. |
