Here, we investigate the role of zinc additives in precursor conversion event and growth kinetics of InP QDs by directly observing metal-phosphorus intermediates emerging in the midst of synthesis using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. In conjunction with density functional theory calculations and electrostatic potential charge analysis on the precursor conversion, we demonstrate that zinc carboxylate forms a stable Zn-P intermediate complex with P(SiMe3)3 more favorably than indium carboxylate so that showing lower reactivity than In-P complex resulting in monodisperse QDs ensemble. In addition, we provide a mechanistic insight of the zinc incorporation pathway into InP QDs and synthetic design principles for engineering of InP based QDs for display applications. |
