Various heterogeneous catalysts such as MgO, Mg-Al mixed oxide, hydrotalcite, Mg-Ce mixed oxide, manganese oxide, zeolites and exchange resins have been studied for aldol condensation. As different reaction pathways exist on acid- and base-catalyzed aldol condensation, the effect of acidity and basicity on the condensation of acetone and n-butanol has been investigated. For this work, supported Cu catalysts (Cu/Al2O3, Cu/SiO2 and Cu/MgO) were prepared and tested in the title reaction. The activity results revealed that the product distribution is influenced by the support property. Among the catalysts, Cu/MgO showed the best activity and selectivity to higher ketones, whereas the selectivity to butyl butyrate (formed by self condensation of n-butanol) was the highest over Cu/Al2O3. Therefore, we can suggest that the cross condensation favorably occurs over base catalyst rather than the self condensation. Further experiments are under investigation in order to understand how the catalysts affect the condensation reaction. Thus, the catalysts will be characterized by XRD, TPR, N2O-RFC and TEM. |
