Colloidal Bicontinuous Cubic Membranes of Block Copolymers with Tunable Surface Functional Groups |

We report the self-assembly of amphiphilic dendritic-linear block copolymers into polymer cubosomes in aqueous solution. The presence of precisely defined bulky dendritic blocks drives the block copolymers to spontaneously form highly curved bilayers in aqueous solution, which results in the formation of colloidal bicontinuous cubic mesophases of the desired lattices. Analogous to lipidic bicontinuous mem-branes and their colloidal forms, the resulting polymer cubo-somes possess the internal networks of water channels provid-ing high surface area with tunable surface functional groups that can serve as anchoring points for large guests such as proteins and enzymes. Our results may open new avenues to investigate and utilize the interesting properties of inverted cubic mesophases of block copolymers in solution, which have been elusive to conventional solution self-assembly of block copolymers |
