Poly (glycolic acid) is the simplest bio-degradable polymer, which is widely used in biomedical and pharmacological sectors due to excellent performance and bio-degradability. Currently available high molecular weight PGA in market is synthesized by ring opening polymerization of glycolide (a cyclic diester of glycolic acid), but very high purity of glycolide required for high molecular weight PGA. Whereas, it can also be synthesized by direct polycondensation of glycolic acid (GA), however, direct polycondensation is not a developed method yet, due to poor thermal stability of PGA in melt state and difficulty in synthesis of high molecular weight PGA. In present research, PGA was successfully synthesized by direct polycondensation of glycolic acid (GA) via solution polymerization in diphenylether in the presence zinc acetate and p-toluenesulfonic acid as a catalyst. The obtained polymers were characterized in terms of inherent viscosity and thermal properties. |
