Highly porous composite hydrogel networks (PCHNs) composed from poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (poly(HEMA)) with natural cotton fiber (NCF) have been prepared. A new approach has been developed by incorporation of both nano curcumin (n-CUR) on NCF and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in hydrogel. The stability and interactions of CUR with NCF were studied by 1H NMR, fourier-transform infra-red spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The formation of AgNPs in PCHNs was confirmed by UV-Visible spectroscopy, and XRD. Interestingly, poly(HEMA) networks were formed along on the NCF with porous network structure and were confirmed by SEM morphological observations. TEM results showed AgNPs were formed with highly uniform and size controlled with spherical shape (~5 nm size) in the PCHNs. The antibacterial activity results revealed that PCHNs had strong antibacterial activity against E. coli. Hence, the developed PCHNs to be used as antibacterial wound dressing applications. |
