제목 Alkoxy silane-Functioalized Polystyrene Latexes. A step toward the Synthesis of Polymer Core/Titania Shell hybrid nanocomposite particles for Electronic Ink Application.
초록 Polystyrene latex particles containing alkoxy silane functional groups on their surface have been synthesized in emulsion polymerization using 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TMSPMA) as a functional comonomer. We showed that the colloidal stability of the resulting latex suspensions was highly dependent on pH and on the nature of the surfactant. The surface properties of the functionalized polymer latexes were investigated in depth using electrophoretic measurements and the soap titration method. Both techniques gave qualitative evidence of the presence of SiOCH3 groups at the particle surface. The concentration of surface charges was quantified by potentiometric and conductometric titrations. As expected, the surface charge density increased with in an increase in the pH and with an increase in TMSPMA concentration. Because of the presence of alkoxy silane groups at the particle surface, no loss of colloidal stability was observed when the functional polystyrene latexes were suspended into ethanol/water mixture.
