With increasing environmental awareness, diverse biodegradable plastics have been extensively developed in the last two decades. Simultaneously, the testing methods for evaluating the biodegradability of the polymers have been studied, thus international standards for biodegradability test in compost conditions such as ISO-14855 and ASTM D5338 have been established and widely used in recent. However, compared to the well-organized standards for the land environment, a solid testing scheme for the biodegradation of polymers in the marine environment is not existing yet. In this work, in order to purpose to outline a test method of the biodegradability of plastics within the entire marine environment, we prepared three different conditions where plastic waste can deposit(seawater, seawater-sediment interface, and sediment-porewater condition). Under three different conditions, we investigated the change of biodegradability of microcrystalline cellulose, the most used reference material. |
