A perylene-based lyotropic chromic liquid crystal (DPDI) was newly designed and synthesized for the fabrication of macroscopically oriented and patterned thin film polarizer (PTFP) on the flexible polymer substrates. The phase behavior and molecular self-assembly structure of DPDI were studied by spectroscopic, scattering and microscopic techniques. After mechanically shearing the DPDI in aqueous solution on the flexible polymer substrates, we fabricated the PTFP by etching the unpolymerized regions selectively blocked by photomask during the photopolymerization. By the solvent and pencil hardness tests, chemical and mechanical stabilities were confirmed and its surface morphology was further investigated by optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy. The flexible PTFP with robust chemical and mechanical stabilities can allow us to develop the advanced flexible optoelectronic devices.
