Preparation of Nafion/layered polypyrrole/platinum composite for ionic polymer actuator |

Ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC), highlighted as the electro-active biomimetic material, has high bending deformation by low input voltage. But there are definitely limitation in bending actuation capability such as response rate and generated force, because bare polymer matrix are usually used commercial Nafion membrane with constant equivalent weight and mechanical flexibility. In this study, we synthesized polypyrrole(PPy) layer onto both surface of the Nafion membrane by chemical oxidative polymerization, and then reduced platinum particle layer onto the prepared Nafion/layered PPy by chemically impregnation-reduction reaction. The prepared composite membrane was characterized with SEM, elemental analysis, ATR-IR and ionic conductivity. We observed that this composite has higher electro-active actuation capability compared to IPMC with commercial Nafion. |
