Obesity is a global public health problem. The obesity epidemic has been growing in developed nations, including the United States, for decades. Moreover, this epidemic has spread to developing nations. The worldwide explosion of obesity has resulted in an ever-increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes—a noncommunicable disease that affects more than 370 million people. Without concerted efforts to address the pathogenesis and treatment of this syndrome, the harmful macrovascular and microvascular outcomes of type 2 diabetes will remain a major burden for decades to come. Although several anti-diabetes and obesity drugs are in markets, global pharmaceutical companies and research groups are concentrating their effort on developing more efficacious and safe drugs. In this seminar, discovery of anti-diabetic/obesity agents at GIST and KRICT and their licensing efforts will be presented. |
