As an alternative to phthalate plasticizers, esterified hyperbranched polyglycerol (EHPG) was successfully synthesized by ring-opening anionic polymerization. The molecular weight of HPG was well-controlled by variation of monomer/initiator molar. The terminal hydroxyl groups of HPG were modified by esterification reaction with butyric anhydride for hydrophobicity and the degree of substitution was determined by 1H NMR. For estimating the plasticizing performance of EHPG, flexible poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) films were fabricated by solution blending method. From the results of the lowering of glass transition temperature and the enhancement in ultimate elongation, the flexibility of PVC/EHPG film was as high as that of PVC/di(ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) film. In migration tests, the relatively lower amounts of additives were migrated out from PVC/EHPG than PVC/ DEHP. Finally, a noble plasticizer with high plasticizing efficiency and enhanced migration resistance was developed. |
