제목 Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Acellular Constructs and Decellularize Tissues as Emerging Biotechnology for Tissue Regeneration
초록 Substantial research efforts have been devoted and are still being dedicated towards the development of biomaterials for regenerative medicine. Significant knowledge has been generated from elucidating the mechanisms of tissue repair, to the advancement of therapeutic approaches and improvement of implantable materials through the past decades. Although synthetic materials have been proven to be more than capable of mimicking the biomechanical properties and microstructure of tissues, these implantable materials will never achieve full integration with the human body. On one hand, there is also a peaked interest with regards to the utilization of stem cells which promises greater capacity for regeneration and functionality. However, it too poses a significant hurdle since maintenance and upscaled implementation of cell-based therapy requires significant resources and stringent policies. With the existing technologies for material processing, characterization, and the developed knowledge cell biology, the use of acellular constructs and decellularized tissues have emerged as a promising approach towards advancing biomaterials for functional regeneration of tissues. Cellular response in terms of proliferation and differentiation have been improved by integrating cell-derived biomolecules into synthetic materials with well-developed fabrication methods. Development of decellularization methods has increased the availability of serviceable micro-architectures of complex organs for researchers to explore and use as platforms for cell-based studies which paves the way for regenerated organs. These acellular biological constructs can be used as a tool to finally break the glass ceiling in the field of regenerative medicine.
