Polymer core/metal shell structure have been of ongoing research interest in catalysis, biochemistry, electronics, and photonics. In this study we prepared polystyrene (PS)/silver (Ag) core-shell particles with uniform thickness through electroless plating assisted by polydopamine and glucose. First, monodisperse PS spherical particles of 3 micrometers were synthesized by dispersion polymerization. In addition, nonspherical particles were prepared by the stretching and squeezing of PS spherical particle-embedded film. Polydopamine and glucose were used as reducing agents for metal ions. The thickness uniformity of Ag plating and the conductivity enhancement were investigated by the morphology and electrical conductivity of PS core/Ag shell composite particles. The Ag layers on spherical and nonspherical PS particles were successfully encapsulated, resulting in excellent electrical conductivity. We also examined the so called "coffee ring effect" of the suspensions comprised either of spherical particles or of nonspherical particles. It was shown that the nonspherical particles had an effect on the supression of coffee ring phenomenon. |
