Thermal behavior of semifluoronated smectic liquid crystals |
초록 |
A smetic phase of liquid crystal (SmLC) has been commonly known to have layered structure symmetrically forming focal conic domain along with defect line. Such layered perfluoronated SmLCs are thermally sublimated and then form noble 3D structures. Here, we have synthesized rod-like SmLC molecules by increasing methyl group gradually in biphenyl carboxylates (head group) having fluorinated alkyl chain (tail group). We measured weight lose percentage and thermal phase transition with Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) respectively, and then confirmed that thermal sublimation happen in smetic phase by TGA data. Its unique thermal sublimation property enables to access layer by layer - exfoliated fabrications for various applications. We also have suggested how the length of alkyl chains bonded to head group dependents the temperature of sublimations in terms of molecular interactions by using X-ray diffraction, SEM, TGA and DSC. |
