Carboxylic acid functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube (c-MWNT) adsorbed onto poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microspheres were prepared in this study. Initially, the MWNT was functionalized using carboxylic acid and PMMA microspheres with 5µm diameter were synthesized via dispersion polymerization. The c-MWNT/PMMA microspheres were then fabricated by blending technique i.e. simple mixing of c-MWNT and PMMA solutions under ultrasonication. Surface morphologies of the c-MWNT-adsorbed PMMA microspheres were compared with the microspheres prepared from different solvents using scanning electron microscopic (SEM). Conductivity of the c-MWNT/PMMA microspheres becomes higher when formed in de-ionized water than that in methanol due to better dispersibility of the c-MWNT onto the PMMA surface. In addition, c-MWNT/PMMA microsphere suspension dispersed in silicone oil showed typical electrorheological characteristics of fibril structure under an applied electric field. |
