Starting in 2000, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began investigating perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) because it is very persistent in the environment. It was being found that PFOA caused developmental and other adverse effectsin laboratory animals. Accordingly, the eight major companies have been participated in 2010-2015 Stewardship Program created by the EPA to work toward eliminating emmisions of PFOA and its precursors. Perfluoropolyethers are believed to be practical alternative of PFOA. In this presentation, environmentally benignsynthesis of PFPEs andthiernovel applications will be discussed. |
