At the meeting the synthesis and characterization of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (hereafter: PPO) will be discussed. The copper catalyzed oxidative coupling polymerization of 2,6-dimethlyphenol (DMP) to poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) was performed in an organic solvent via the conventional solution polymerization [1]. In this experiment, the effects of various experimental conditions on the oxidative polymerization have been investigated. The polymers were characterized by GPC, TGA, and DSC. The spectroscopic characterization was performed by NMR and FT-IR. The various experimental conditions include the kinds of catalysts, temperatures, stirring speeds, solvents, and base to copper ratios. Efforts to minimize the amount of diphenoquinone (DPQ) were made. In addition, dioxygen uptake measurements were performed to find out the most effective catalyst-ligand complex system. 1. P.J.
