Osteoporosis (OP) is one of the most common bone diseases frequently occurring in elderly population. Representative OP symptom is the reduction of bone mineral density, leading to fractures. Bone-related diseases including OP result in a serious deterioration in the patient's quality of life. Therefore, it is highly demanded to develop bone substitutes with excellent biocompatibility. Bisphosphonate (BP) is a drug used for the treatment of OP by the suppression of bone resorption via inhibiting osteoclast activity. In this study, chitosan microspheres loaded with BP were prepared. The shape, chemical state, and surface potential of the microsphere were evaluated using SEM, FTIR, and zeta potential, respectively. The effect of BP release pattern from the microsphere was analyzed by cell assay. Our result demonstrates the controlled BP release can be achieved by loading in chitosan microsphere and modulate osteoblast proliferation. |
