POM was compounded with an organophilic clay modified with octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide(ODTA). A commercially available sodium montmorillonite, Cloisite Na+ (NAMMT) was treated with ODTA to prepare the organophilic clay, ODTA-MMT. The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of neat POM and POM/clay composites were investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The crystallization process of POM/NAMMT and POM/ODTA as well as that of neat POM was well represented by the Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny and Liu et al. The crystallization rate decreased in the order of POM/ODTA-MMT > POM/NAMMT > neat POM at a given cooling rate, indicating that ODTA-MMT exhibited more effective nucleation activity than NAMMT for the crystallization of POM. The activation energies of the crystallization process were determined by using the Kissinger equation. |
