Two-stage cultivation separates biomass production step and lipid accumulation step, thereby achieving high lipid content without losing biomass productivity. In the lipid accumulation step, the microalgae grown in the biomass production stage is transferred into a growth-limited condition to induce lipid accumulation within microalgae. However, due to the lipid synthesis mechanism of microalgae, which is very complex and sensitive, final lipid content can vary with various cultivation parameters. Carbon dioxide, which is also used for the synthesis of fatty acid, has a potential to increase lipid accumulation rate by supplying raw carbon source to microalgae. In this research, carbon dioxide supplement is controlled to investigate its effect on lipid accumulation under nitrogen starvation. Other cultivation conditions, such as light, biomass production period and lipid accumulation period, are also manipulated to investigate their combinatorial effects with carbon dioxide. |
