Polycyclic thioketals for high refractive and thermally stable optical polymer |

One of the most important physical properties of optical materials is the refractive index. It is used to produce optical materials such as lenses, optical waveguide, laser and so on. Unlike conventional hard optical materials such as silica and inorganic crystals, organic optical materials have many advantages such as lightness, flexibility, easy synthesis process. But low refractive index of organics has been received as one of disadvantage especially for high refraction applications. Refraction is based on the interaction of electrons in a molecule with the oscillating electronic field of light. Electron-rich atoms such as sulfur or bromine or iodine are known to result in high refraction. We have attempted to increase the refraction with sulfur and assumed that high sulfur content in a unit volume is desirable to elevate the refractive index. In this study, we will suggest sulfur containing cyclic molecules for the high refractive material. |
