It is highly demanded to increase Ni content in LiNiXCoYMnZO2 (NCM) cathode materials to maximize the energy density of Li-ion Batteries (LIBs). However, high Ni-content NCM suffers from poor thermal stability. In this study, we demonstrate that the metal (Ni, Co, Mn) dissolution behaviors of various Al2O3-coated NCM 622 powders are greatly related to their acid and total surface free energy (SFE). The amounts of Ni, Co and Mn ion dissolved from the NCM powders during 60oC storage are measured by the atomic absorption spectroscopy(AAS). Then, their SFE components are analyzed by the adsorption method with three probe liquids. Strong linear correlation is observed between the metal dissolution and the surface free energy (SFE). |
