Production of biodiesel from microalgae mats |

Microalgae are primary producers of the food chain and have wide various applications in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industry. Fatty acids (FAs) are one of the primary metabolites of microalgae, which enrich their utility both in the form of food and fuels. Algae biofuels may provide a viable alternative to fossil fuels. Engine worthy fatty acid methyl ester (biodiesel) can be obtained from naturally occurring marine microalgae mats (Microspora sp) and marine microalgae cultured in open salt pans (Chlorella) together with value addition of co-products. Naturally occurring lipid-bearing microalgal mats collected from the west coast of India, were used for the production of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME). The biodiesel obtained was used demonstrating the suitability for the running of a regular vehicle without any engine modification. |
