High-entropy alloys (HEAs), which are equiatomic (or near-equiatomic) multi-component alloys with high mixing entropies, opened a new paradigm of alloy design due to their unique compositions and exceptional properties. Among a variety of HEAs, NbMoTaW refractory alloys have been reported to exhibit superior high-temperature strength, being considered for potential applications under the extreme environment at high temperatures. In this study, we suggest a new concept of refractory HEAs-based composites, wherein nano-scale oxides and/or carbides are uniformly dispersed in the HEA matrix. Mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering were used to refine the crystalline size of the matrix and to uniformly disperse the reinforcement. The effect of the reinforcement on heat/oxidation resistance of HEAs will be discussed. |
