Microporous silica membranes, for use in gas separation, were prepared by a sol-gel method using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) on an g-alumina coated a-alumina tube. In order to control the pore structure, either [(methacryloxy)propyl]trimethoxysilane (MTMS), isooctyltrimethoxysilane (ITMS) O-(methacryloxyethyl) -N-(triethoxysilylpropyl) urethane (MTESU) was added as the template. The pore size of the silica, which was formed by calcination at 400-700℃, was in the range of 0.6-0.7nm. The membranes, which were prepared using MTMS, as well as ITMS, both showed high permeances to hydrogen. Separation factors of the MTMS-added membrane at permeation temperatures of 100 and 300℃were 11 and 36 for an equimolar mixture of H2 and CO2, and 54 and 132 for that of H2 and CH4, respectively.
