Synthesis and characterization of new-type reverse osmosis membrane from polyvinyl alcohol based copolymers |

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a hydrophilic membrane material was employed to prepare the new-type of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes exhibiting high water flux with proper salt rejection. The polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based copolymers were synthesized by controlled living free radical polymerization (LFRP). LFRP was chosen, because it enables us to control the molecular weight, narrow molecular weigh distribution. The structure and the composition of synthesized copolymers have been characterized by 1H-NMR spectroscopy and FT-IR. An atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to investigate surface morphology of RO membrane. The molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of their polymer have been analyzed by gel-permeation chromatography (GPC). |
