Hybrid Extraction-Distillation approach to recover 2,3-Butanediol from fermentation broth |

Depletion of fossil fuels pushes the attention towards alternate resources from last few decades. Production of BDO by a fermentation process is one of the roots of those resources. BDO in the final product is very low, so, there is need to recover it from other components. A detailed design was proposed to separate BDO using conventional distillation and Hybrid Extraction Distillation. Solvent selection method has successfully implemented to determine oleyl alcohol as the good solvent for the proposed HED configuration based on numerous feature of each solvent candidate. NRTL and UNIQUAC property methods were used to obtain binary interaction parameters through rigorous Aspen Plus regression and validated using experimental data. BDO up to 90% with 99 wt% purity in the final product was successfully achieved.
