Microfluidic Tissue Engineering: Towards In-Vitro Model of Vascularized Tissue Constructs |

This presentation will describe recent results toward constructing vascularized tissue constructs using microfluidics technology. Despite increased understanding and knowledge of genomics, proteomics, and cell biology, attempts to develop new drugs often encounter difficulties due to limitations of conventional cell-based assays performed in 2D monolayer of cells. These cell-based assay models poorly resemble 3D tissues that are composed of blood vessels and multiple cell types. Our laboratory is developing a 3D tissue based drug screening platform that will be composed of connected blood vessels that will have similar flow characteristics as the normal or cancer tissues. We will describe various approaches that integrate fluid mechanics, microfluidics, and tissue engineering toward the goal of microfluidics based vascularized tissue construct for drug screening. |
