There are three types of distillation columns having high energy efficiency. One of them, the divided wall column or the Petlyuk distillation column has been being utilized in commercial applications for many years. Other two types are a diabatic distillation column having small heat exchangers inside the column trays and an internally heat-integrated distillation column having a direct contact between the rectifying and stripping sections. In this presentation the principle and design of these distillation columns are explained to show how they are working in field applications.
