Chloromethylation of poly (phenylene sulfide) (PPS) fiber with very good flame and thermal resistance and excellent solvent-resistance was achieved using chloromethyl methyl ether in a tin (IV) chloride-catalyzed reaction in toluene solution to improve solubility, anionic dyeability, and disperse dye adsorption of the PPS fiber. The chloromethylation is widely used to produce an intermediate to give cationic functional group to the aromatic polymers. The chemical structure of the chloromethylated PPS fiber was confirmed by 1H NMR and Fourier transform IR spectroscopy. The solubility of chloromethylated PPS fiber in common solvents was observed as a function of the degree of chloromethylation. The quaternization of chloromethylated PPS fiber could give a good anionic exchangeability, anionic dyeablity, and high dye adsorption.
