Enhanced Hole Extraction by Interaction between CuI and MoO3 in the Hole transport Layer of Organic Photovoltaic devices |

We investigate how a hybrid interlayer as HTL consisting of copper iodide (CuI) and molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) affects the performance of organic photovoltaics (OPV) based on P3HT:PCBM blends. It is shown that spin-coated CuI film has rough surface on top of indium tin oxide (ITO) as much as it can be directly short in the devices but the surface of the CuI film is able to be planarzied when MoO3 is deposited on top of the CuI by thermal evaporation. This hybrid interlayer in the OPV results in the enhanced short circuit current without the change of open-circuit voltage (Voc) and fill-factor (FF), and hence higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) than that of OPV with only MoO3 and CuI even PEDOT:PSS as HTL. The improved performance is attributed to better hole extraction due to the increase of oxygen vacancy defects in MoO3, which leads to additional pathway between the HOMO of P3HT and the work function of MoO3. |
