Stimuli-responsive Polyelectrolyte Block Copolymer-based Micelles for Advanced Drug Delivery System |

Stimuli-responsive polyelectrolyte block copolymer-based micelles have received much attention for advanced drug delivery. In this study, two stimuli-responsive polyelectrolyte block copolymers of positively charged poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate-block-N-isopropylacrylamide, NIPAM) and negatively charged poly(acrylic acid-block-NIPAM) were synthesized by reversible-addition-fragmentation chain-transfer radical polymerization and the temperature-triggered self-assembly was characterized. Two different polyelectrolyte block copolymers under physiological conditions formed self-assembled micelles with poly(NIPAM) block as a core and polyelectrolyte block as a shell above the transition temperature. Depending on conjugation mechanism after aminolysis, hydrophobic molecules could be controlled released. Potentially, the temperature triggered self-assembly mechanism would have a great potential for drug delivery, regenerative medicine, and tissue engineering. |
