Effect of Trifluoromethyl Tail Moiety in Polyimide Methylene Cinnamate on the Ability to Control Liquid Crystal Alignment |

Recently, we have reported a new class of photoalignment material based on soluble 6FDA-ODA polyimides bearing methylene cinnamate side chain. In this polymer system, excellent photosensitivity was achieved due to the highly photosensitive cinnamate side chains. However, it was not able to control the pretilt angle of the resulting electrically controlled birefringent LC cell, which was as low as less than 1o. To improve the pretilt angle, in this study, a new series of fluorinated photoalignable polyimides were synthesized by the esterification of chloromethylated polyimide with trifluoromethyl cinnamic acid. The chemical structures of resulting polymers were characterized by 1H-NMR and FT-IR spectroscopies. Thermal behavior of resulting polymers was determined by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The photosensitivity of polyimide was investigated with UV spectroscopic method. Their photoaligning properties of nematic liquid crystal were investigated by using linearly polarized UV light (LPUVL) light. The effect of trifuoromethyl moiety of cinnamate group on photoaligning characteristics were compared and discussed in terms of the structures of the cinnamate functional groups. We found the pretilt angle and response time were affected considerable by introducing different functional groups. |
