Magnesium(Mg) has light density with excellent properties when alloyed with other metals, so it is used in various field like structure, aerospace, automotive. Dolomite is representative raw material for Mg and Mg is separated from minerals through the pidgeon process. However, a high reaction temperature over 1000℃ is required in order to thermally decompose dolomite, and a large amount of CO2 is generated during the decomposition process. We propose a new process that uses formate adduct to separate Magnesium oxide (MgO). When formate adduct solution is added to calcium oxide and MgO mixture after calcination process, MgO can be separated easily due to difference of kinetics and solubility between two materials. Furthermore, if we use CO2 emitted during thermal-decomposition process as a raw material for formate adduct, CO2 emission during the process can be reduced effectively. |
