Characterization of Cellulose Nanowhisker Reinforced Polymer Nanocomposites by a Twin Screw Extrusion |

Biodegradable nanocomposites were prepared using cellulose nanowhisker (CNW) as the reinforcement and polylactic acid (PLA) as a matrix. PLA is polyester of lactic acid and CNW is cellulose derived from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) by acid hydrolysis to remove the amorphous regions. The nanocomposites were prepared with different CNW contents by a twin screw extruder. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were carried out to determine thermal properties of PLA/CNW nanocomposites. Physical properties of PLA/CNW nanocomposites were measured by universal test machine (UTM) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) study is used for the morphology of nanocomposites and dispersion of CNW in the nanocomposites. |
