High Efficiency and Stable Organic Solar Cells using a Ytterbium as Interfacial Buffer Layer on Cathode Electrode |

Ytterbium (Yb) was used as an cathode buffer layer in the conventional poly(3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM-60) bulk hetero junction (BHJ) cells. These buffer layers can act as a electron-extraction layer and increase open circuit voltage (Voc), leading to high efficiency and stable organic electronic devices. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) composed of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT:PCBM/Yb/Al reaches up to 3.12% recording 63% of fill factor (FF) in 1 Sun irradiation and over 50% of its original PCE is retained in 72Hrs. It was found that Yb based cells have significant shunt resistance which contribute to a high FF and Voc. It is demonstrated that the properties of the cathode buffer layer can have a significant impact on the efficiency and stability of OPVs. |
