Plastic production has increased and alarge amount of greenhouse gases are being emitted. As aresult, the demand for bioplastics is increasing. Polyhydroxybutyrate(PHB) is apromising bioplastic because of its properties similar to polypropylene.Cyanobacteria can produce PHB as an energy source using sunlight and CO2, so usingcyanobacteria to produce bioplastics can achieve both environmental andeconomic benefits. As a novel PHB-producing strain, fast-growing cyanobacteriumSynechococcus elongatus UTEX 2973 was developed by introducing heterologousphaCAB genes. Under photoautotrophic condition, the developed strain produced420 mg L-1 with the highest specific productivity of 75.2 mg L-1d-1. When compared with a naturally PHB-producing cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp.PCC 6803 under nitrogen deprivation, the developed strain showed 2.4-foldhigher PHB productivity. This study can provide a solution to deal with plasticwaste problems and contribute to CO2 mitigation. |
