Optical properties of a disperse red 13 (DR-13) attached on the surface of silica spheres have been investigated. Two step reaction processes were used to attach the DR-13 on the surface of the monodisperse silica spheres. The first reaction is urethane bond formation reaction between the DR-13 (-OH) and a 3-isocyanatopropyl triethoxysilane (ICPTES, -N=C=O). The second reaction is the hydrolysis and condensation reactions between the first step reaction product, ICPTES-DR-13 (ICPDR), and the silica spheres. The existence of a new absorption peat at 1700 cm-1 corresponding the C=O stretching vibration, indicate the complete reaction between –N=C=O and –OH. The ICPTES/DR-13/silica-sphere (ICPDRSS) has weak brownish color when it is dried. The color of the ICPDRSS changed to intense red when it is wetted in methanol, ethanol and 2-propanol. This system can be applicable to the sensitive alcohol sensor. |
