Characterization studies on surface functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube |

In the present work, surface functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotube was carried out by introducing carboxyl groups on the surface by acid treatment followed by the reaction with multifunctional silane like 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane. The chemical interaction of silane with the oxidized nanotube surface has been confirmed from the peak at 1646 cm-1 that corresponds to the NH bending vibration of amide group. Energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX) studies indicate the presence of silane on the surface of the carbon nanotubes. X-ray diffraction reveals the change in the crystalline phases due to surface functionalization. Raman spectroscopy results of the acid treated CNT further corroborates the formation of surface defects due to the introduction of carboxyl groups. Thermogravimetric analysis of the functionalized CNT exhibits a peak at around 2500 C indicating the chemical interaction between the silane and CNT
