Study on the development of functional scaffold for hard tissue substitutes |

Tissue engineering is a newly emerging field for the improvement of the quality of human life by using materials and cells. Bone-related diseases can be one of the critical problems which deteriorate the quality of human life, especially elderly people. This study investigated the effect of the surface modification of a 3D porous scaffold on osteoblastic responses. The scaffold was fabricated by blending PLA and PLGA. The optimal blend ratio was determined based on in vitro cell assays. The surface modification by drug-incorporated calcium phosphate film strongly upregulated the activation of osteoblast differentiation and triggered the earlier initiation of mineralization. Histological staining was performed on the implanted scaffolds and elucidated that the surface modification strongly actively stimulated the angiogenesis. Our result demonstrated that the introduced surface modification method can be utilized for the improvement of biological functions of implants. |
