Preparation of Nafion/sulfopropylated polysilsesquioxane composite membrane for ionic polymer-metal composite actuator |

Nafion, widely used as ion-exchange membrane for ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) actuator, has the limited membrane properties due to the constant ion-exchange capacity (IEC) and its thickness. In this study, we prepared the Nafion/sulfonated polysilsesquioxane membrane with the increased IEC by in situ sol-gel process of 3-trihydroxysilyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (THOPS). We observed that the modified composite membrane showed much higher ionic conductivity and water uptake than that of the commercial Nafion membrane and accordingly improved actuation properties. |
