Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), a semi-crystalline super engineering plastic, has been a prime choice for orthopedic implant material for its superior modulus and strength and biocompatibility compared to other polymers. In this study, graphene oxide and hydroxyapatite were added to be the composite material for spinal implant application. Both fillers were chemically functionalized to enhance the filler effect and reduce the agglomeration in composite, and element analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was investigated. Mechanical properties such as flexural strength and compressive strength critical in human bone characteristics were measured. Morphology of the composites fracture was also examined to show the well-dispersed filler with chemical modification in composite fabrication. Bioactivity of the composites was characterized by apatite formation on the surface of the composites soaked in simulated body fluid solution. |
