Drug-eluting balloons (DEBs) have clinical limitations due to their low drug delivery efficiency and drug loss during transition to the disease site. To overcome these, we suggested multilayer coated-balloon catheter, composed of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/Liposome/PVP. The multilayer coating system minimized drug loss during reaching to lesion site and maximized drug delivery with release of everolimus (EVL)-encapsulated liposome from the surface of catheter. Additionally, the lipids containing disulfide bond could continuously release nitric oxide (NO) reacted with NO donor in the body, which inhibits smooth muscle cell migration and facilitates endothelial cell proliferation. The multilayer coating system with drug-loaded and NO-releasing liposome can be used as an advanced DEB platform for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. |
