Preparation and carbonization of lignin/sepiolite hybrid aerogels |

Lignin is a kind of biopolymer consisting of phenylpropane units and aliphatic moieties with complex heterogeneous structure. Industrial lignin as byproduct of pulping process (e.g. kraft lignin from kraft pulping) was studied for high-value utilization because of its abundance and relatively low cost. Lignin-based carbon materials are a kind of the utilization methods due to its relatively high carbon content among biomass and economic advantage. Sepiolite is a kind of clay minerals with fibrous and porous structure. Aerogel has characteristic physical properties including exceptional low density and high porosity. Among the aerogels, carbon aerogel was studied for electrical, adsorption, catalyst, and other applications. In this study, lignin/sepiolite hybrid aerogels were prepared by ultra-sonication and freeze-drying. Carbonization of the hybrid aerogels was also studied to prepare lignin-based carbon/sepiolite hybrid aerogels as a kind of carbon/clay hybrid aerogels. |
