제목 | Development of carbon slurry cathode using mussel-inspired hydrophilic binder for seawater batteries |
초록 | Seawater batteries (SWBs) are promising energy storage systems using natural abundant seawater as the cathode material. However, battery performance is hindered due to the extremely slow kinetics of the cathode reaction (i.e. oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)). While commercial binders (e.g. PVDF) have poor reaction kinetics due to the poor wettability with water because of their hydrophobic nature, hydrophilic slurry cathodes can noticeably improve the OER/ORR kinetics. Herein, we synthesized a DOPA-based hydrophilic binder (DB) and developed a slurry cathode using hydrophilic activated carbon powder (ACP) and the binder. The SWBs with DB-ACP cathode showed reduced voltage gap (0.62 V) and higher energy efficiency (94.5%) compared to hydrophilic activated carbon cloth (ACC) (1.74 V, 64.8%) and PVDF-ACP cathode (1.48 V, 84.5 %) after 100 cycles in a charge-discharge cycle test carried out at a current density of 0.1 mA cm-2 for 5 h. |
