Commercialization of ethylene-based or propylene-based elastomers (they have both rubber and plastic properties) using metallocene catalysts has been introduced only by a few chemical companies in the world. Regarding technical issues, most of metallocene-based elastomers should be produced only under high temperature solution process compared to other metallocene-based polyolefins that can be produced under a gas-phase or slurry phase processes. Addditionally, a differentiated catalyst with higher comonomer efficiency and higher molecular weight capability is basically needed for their productions. LG Chem has commercialized several kinds of ethylene/alpha-olefin elastomers (LUCENETM Polyolefin Elastomers) for the first time in Korea using the combination of our proprietary metallocene catalyst and solution process technologies since 2008. LUCENETM polyolefin elastomers have totally different polymer structure compared to other competitors and offer outstanding performance capabilities for value-added products. Polyolefin elastomers have emerged as leading materials for automotive exterior and interior applications via impact modification of polypropylene, wire and cable, film packaging, adhesives, and footwear foams. Our LUCENETM polyolefin elastomers offer customers a wide range of products to meet the specifications of their various application requirements. In this section, we will introduce our commercially available metallocene-based elastomers, including their production technologies and main applications. |
