제목 Impact of Nitrogen Depetion Stress and Growth Phase on Fatty Acids and Carbohydrate Content in  Porphyridium cruentum
초록 Microalgae have high potentials for biofuel production. However, their metabolic regulation of carbohydrate and fatty acids has not been well-studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the physiological change of Porphyridium cruentum under nitrogen starvation. The different response patterns of carbohydrate and fatty acid content were observed according to growth phase. Nitrogen starvation at the exponential phase changed fatty acids composition but not the fatty acid content. Exposure to nitrogen starvation during exponential phase increased carbohydrate content up to 41% after 12 hours and decreased after 84 hours. In contrast, exposure to nitrogen starvation during stationary phase accumulated carbohydrate content up to 43.4% of dry weight for 84 hours. These findings that demonstrate the differences in the physiological responses under nitrogen stress will help understand cellular systems for carbohydrate and fatty acids synthesis in microalgae.
